Anna Beddoes to Davies Giddy, 30 March 1806
Of many a dainty flower
A garland I will weave
All wet with tears a welcome shower
For sore my heart did grieve [1]1806 March the 30th

Notes
[1] The context for this poem was the quarrel that resulted when Giddy, early in 1806, accused Anna of withholding her love and wished for freedom. In 1808 Anna remembered ‘What I suffered two years ago both in mind and body was too severe for me ever to forget, — from some thoughts – from some scenes I turn myself with violence yet they again recur and with bitterness that I have no words to express’.
[2] This note has been added by Giddy.
[3] Giddy had been elected to parliament in 1804 and again in 1806: he was now the MP for Bodmin, in Cornwall.
