Thomas Beddoes to T. G. Estcourt, [?1808]

My dear Sir

I think you should be cupped again – In addition to the pills, I recommend the brisk drink spoken of as ‘good advice’ viz

Carbonate of soda
(not prepared natron )
half a dram –

dissolved in a drt of water – together with Rochelle salt a dram or enough to keep the bowels free – add of the diluted vitriolic acid two drams & a half – drink it (twice a day) effervescing –

Keeping the bowels thus free will strengthen the stomach & relieve the head –

I think you must mean muriate of lime in place of lime water – The muriate shd be taken twice a day as an alternative –
