Thomas and Anna Beddoes to Davies Giddy, [?August 1808]
Dear Giddy
As you have often mentioned Miss Thompson with interest you will be glad to hear that she and Fanny are decidedly countenanced by two senior and opulent branches of the family. But I do not put Anna to write this being unable myself – I find their friends at home do many things to distress them, and in a way which would surprise a person even accustomed to Parliamentary honesty –
I can easily secure them franks here for their sisters – and I have taken the liberty to say that once in nine days or so their sisters might direct a letter under cover to you which you will forward – If I have done wrong tell me & I will countermand the permission. The address is Miss Thompson 27 Richmond Place Clifton Bristol –
Tell me pray if you can whether Capt Buller was opened, & whether Dr __ did not when closeted assure you that he was not in the smallest danger from a disorder which destroyed him in forty eight hours – I well remember you telling me this as also Mr Coutts the same as to the same Dr about Ld Macartney –
My dear friend, the Dr tells you he is not unwell but I must tell you he is far from saying the truth – I can say no more or shall be too late for the post so adieu
Endorsement: Doctor Beddoes / (in Anna’s hand) / 1808
