Thomas Beddoes to Davies Giddy, 20 January 1805
Dear Giddy
I thank you for calling on Carlisle –
Yr sister I understand has long been unwell once a fortnight – In a very few days after marriage, the haemorrhagia returns – That might, to be sure, make her look so wretchedly while here –
Now I apprehend it was excessively imprudent to marry in that state, – I know many married women dreadfully affected with haemorrhagia who did not begin with it – If it does not increase on yr sister or occasion miscarriage, you may call it God’s good providence or a lucky hit – but the present race of women – whose whole constitution appears less shaken than yr sister’s – ought not to reckon upon matrimony as a remedy – I sincerely wish it may prove so to be
Please let Carlisle have the inclosed –
Yrs truly
Thomas Beddoes
