Thomas Beddoes to James Watt, 8 May 1804

Dear Sir

I have tasted Mr Yeo’s bark in powder & decoction – Both seemed strong –

He will send a quarter of a pound – also
Muriate of ammonia in 3-grain pills – 2 for a dose
                    also

12 drams of Serpentaria – which I suppose will add to the efficacy of the bark if Mr G. takes 2 drams in the whole divided among his doses of bark –

But if he dislikes this, I wd have him take a grain of cayenne pepper with each dose of bark – in a pill – This cures even obstinate agues –

Indeed I think he can now hardly too much complicate his medicine, provided his palate & stomach will allow of the complication – This plan I often follow with advantage, where simples do not fully answer –

I am very doubtful whether Mr G’s small progress (or retrogression) be not owing to too little arsenic. However, it seems most prudent to change to the bark – yrs truly

Thomas Beddoes

8 May –

If you come to the Instn between 10 & ½ past 12, you will find me – Enquire at Rowland’s house
