Thomas Beddoes to [Richard Phillips?], 9 January 1803
Sunday
9 Jan. 1803
Dear Sir
I cannot but thank you for the interest you take about me, in addition to what the publications may inspire. I have not seen the Press; & if you can lay your hand upon it wd be obliged to you to send it me – I am not likely to get it here –
What is likely to be the effect of these squibs & crackers you are more likely to know than me – I shd not trouble myself about ordinary abuse however gross – & certainly fault may justly be found with parts of the essays, even in my opinion. But as a person, so occupied as you, has spent three days upon the subject & written so warm a letter, I suppose the case is extraordinary – If the abuse is likely to make the work sell, I wd let it work on – I shd like to be abused into a second edition – which with your approbation I wd totally new-model.
If it is likely to stop the sale, then your opinion on any proper & prudent way of obviating the effect wd receive the greatest attention & most likely implicit deference.
You will please to direct under cover to
F. Saunderson Esq MP
Clifton
Bristol –
I am Dr Sir
Yr much obligd
Thomas Beddoes
