Thomas Beddoes to Matthew Robinson Boulton, 18 June 1799

18 June 1799

Dear Sir

A few days ago I had advice of a box of books forwarded from Leipsic to Mr Busch of Hamburg on my acct – May I beg the favour of you, if you write to Mr Busch soon, to request him to forward them to your correspondent in town, & that correspondent to forward them to me. I am projecting trouble for difft people whom I can never hope to oblige in my turn; and I do not know how much I am likely to give them. I suppose the most considerable part is the getting the package through the customs house here. But I hope that this can be made an article of charge in which case my conscience will feel lighter. Could not I remit the amount to your London correspondent without further trouble to any body else?

There was last year a smaller parcel for which Mr Busch must have paid the Leipsic Bookseller but of which I never heard anything further –

I shall return what nos I have of the Mag Encyclopedigene this week.

I see every day consumptive patients & patients on the verge of consumption recovering. Mr Watt tells me they have not such success at Birmm This is inconceivable – Not only I but Davy & two other physicians who assist in taking charge of the out-patients of the pnc institution witness the cure of the most deplorable cases of lues venerea by nitrous acid –

I mean to [xxxx] execute my project of attempting to teach people how to escape from complaints next winter – & on this acct I hope if it lie in your power you will do what you can to send the above books into my possession

I am Dr Sir
your obliged

Thomas Beddoes
