Thomas Beddoes to James Watt Jr, 2 January 1798
My dear Sir
Your remarks are just & your admonitions piercing. The inclosed which I beg you to preserve will I hope convince you that I have <not> swallowed, gull-like, all our friend A’s encomiums upon his friend B. I have also written to Higgins, who is a good judge & I believe will be sincere. If Boyd be unübertrefflich and have worked in the elaboratory as you in the foundry, it will be no violation of the spirit of the compact & might have been unwise not to secure him. It is not demonstrable that Klaproth wd have sent a capital artist – I think it right that Mrs B should do personal homage to Mr Keir for the great & signal proof of friendship he lately gave her; & though she may be under the necessity of seeing another person while in that part of the country, I do not think horror at that idea will keep her back – she will start next week I hope, if the new chaise wheels are made – I must travel in the mail – The ladies’ anatomical lectures succeed perfectly. The number exceeds thirty & I hope will reach forty. McIntosh who was at yesterdays – the 1st lecture owns that such a course maybe rendered highly instructive without any alloy of disgust. Poor Kevill is better; but there is no security for his continuing so – He goes next week – I suppose you continue well. Have you seen Dr W—g –Sein gutachten uber das gelbliche flechte wollte Ich gern horen – Adieu till week after next
Yours with great regard
T.B.
