Thomas Beddoes to Davies Giddy, 2 March [1795]
To D.G
Dear Giddy
A new edition of my ‘Considerations’ is in the press – it will be nearly a new pamphlet. The number of facts favourable to the pneumatic practce is considerable –
& the single facts distinct – I shall publish a good many in this n. ed. – A Dr. Trotter who had published a <small> the part of the pneumatic theory just before my Obsns appeared having used some expressions resulting from a foolish vanity, & which if they were not ridiculous would be offensive to name. I shall take no direct notice of what says, but much wish for an attestation of my having fallen upon this – & if you do not object, I wish you wd give me one from you nearly in this form – ‘In 1791 I perfectly remember hearing you explain not only that part of your <pneumatic> theory of diseases which relates to sea scurvy, but likewise those <that system of> principally which you have since attempting to carry into practice’ DG
I almost remember the spot in the field between your house & St. E, & I dare say you do not forget the circumstances – I had done partly the same thing in a lecture at which I think you were not present – Pitt is I think getting unpopular rapidly – but it is too late – for I know not much good that wd result from this enormous villain appearing in the light he deserves, unless the enemy wd willingly make peace upon tolerable terms with his successor – which I fear they wd not – I shall be disappointed if your sister does not hold well – Remember me to your father & mother – pray answer me in a fortnight I hope the torrents have not carried you into the sea – yours
