Thomas Beddoes to Richard Beddoes, 24 July 1793
Dear Sir
I find Mr Edgeworth has been with you. I want to know what jointure it is proper to allow his daughter, considering her fortune viz. £2000. The father is perfectly reasonable & equitable, for he leaves this matter entirely to me. I shd be glad to do what is right, but as I am unacquainted with this kind of business, I must consult others about it. I believe it is usual to settle upon women an annuity for life, amounting to about double the interest of the fortune they bring. I shd be glad to know what you & my mother & sister think upon this point: & the sooner you inform me, the better, as I do not perceive what can be gained by delay –
If my sister shd soon see Mr Younge or Mrs Reynolds, I wish she wd tell them that I I have sent Mr Y. an hundred copies of my letter to Dr Darwin, of which he is to give you a dozen, which you may give away to any body you think proper, to send a dozen to Mrs Crump at Albrighton & to divide the rest between himself & Mrs Reynolds to dispose as they shall think proper – I shall write very soon also either to Mr Younge or Reynolds or both.
I suppose you have taken care not to mention to any person the affair to which this letter principally refers, Such things shd not be mentioned, as other persons have no concern whatever with them. – I wd have some of you by all means go to Hopesay as that wd be agreeable to my uncle Richard.
Yours affectly
Thos Beddoes
